Overview

T The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) vision is to be the leading humanitarian organization sustainably promoting the well-being, health and resilience of communities. The KRCS Department of Health, Nutrition and Social Services (HSS) Department has continued to focus on primary health care; a most efficient and cost-effective way to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in a gender responsive, protective and inclusive lens.

KRCS seeks to continue the integration of mental and psychosocial health in programming in Kenya. In particular, KRCS through innovation, works towards enhanced access to its services including psychosocial support services to target populations and promotion of community mental health. Mental Health Psychosocial support through counseling services and psychological first aid (PFA) were some of the important strategies employed in order to address these challenges.

The project sponsor, GSMA, and KRCS, contracted Pathways Technologies Ltd to develop a hybrid Guided Conversation and AI-Powered chatbot to offer Mental Health and Psychosocial Support services at a scale to the public. The chatbot is powered by the Microsoft Bot framework and leverages ChatGPT (LLM) for the AI functionality.

The chatbot service is available in two languages, English and Kiswahili. The chatbot offers privacy and convenience and has been rolled out on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram and LiveChat (KRCS Website) as channels.

  1. Kenya Red Cross Society Mental Health and Psychosocial Support chatbot has the following functionality: 24/7 Accessibility: The chatbot is available round-the-clock, enabling individuals to seek assistance at any time and from any location via the preferred social platforms/channels.
  2. Immediate Assistance and escalation: The service offers users immediate assistance via guided conversations, and seamless transitions to a ChatGPT-powered AI chatbot. Users can be handed over at request to human agents (counselors).
  3. Scalability: The chatbot handles multi-concurrent conversations and effectively tracks each conversation for impact measurement and further intervention if need be.
  4. Performance Dashboards: The service comes with a complete performance dashboard with select KPIs for impact measurement and, downstream analytics.
  5. Personalized Engagement: The service offers privacy and convenience.
