Overview

Port Sacco is a tier 1 licensed deposit-taking Sacco regulated by the Sacco Society Regulatory Authority (SASRA). Established in 1966 by employees of the former East African Harbours & Railways Corporation, the Sacco expanded its common bond in 2010. It now includes diverse membership from salaried and non-salaried individuals, investment groups (Chamas), corporates, sole businesses, and people in the diaspora.

Challenges

Mombasa Port Sacco was dealing with a large amount of data housed in the Navision core system. This data needed to be structured and analysed to provide actionable analytics, data driven and real-time insights, and streamline operations for better decision-making and efficiency. The main challenge involved identifying appropriate key performance indicators from numerous datasets in different departments to generate actionable insights.

Solution Implemented

Port Sacco required a solution that would help them understand their business data better. They sought a partner who understood the importance of data in driving business performance and success and could bring a fresh perspective. With Pathways’ expertise in Business Intelligence & Analytics, they were the perfect fit.

Pathways’ process began by analyzing the Sacco’s business needs and requirements. This led to a clear understanding of the organization’s needs, followed by the creation of a comprehensive BI strategy that offered speed, agility, and the ability to process multiple data streams faster through intuitive dashboards. Pathways then implemented a Business Intelligence and Analytics solution.

The Pathways team developed an ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tool to extract, transform, and load data from the Navision production database to the reporting database developed onpremise. Data was sourced from the NAV system to the production database. Reports were developed in Power BI desktop and published in different workspaces (departments) to Power BI online (an analytics visualization tool), where users access and interact with the reports through the portal.

The main objectives of the project were to:
  1. Analyze raw data in the core system
  2. Develop ETL to Extract, Transform, and Load raw data
  3. Develop analytics reports customized for each department according to their needs
  4. Publish reports in different workspaces (departments) in Power BI online
  5. Provide a holistic view of the Sacco’s performance and a forecasted view for both planning and strategy formulation

Outcome

The implemented solution aggregated data from the Sacco’s source system, ran the ETL logic, and stored data in tables in a reporting layer ready for further processing, analytics, visualization, and reporting using Microsoft Power BI. It also provided a reporting and data guided decision-making framework for the Sacco, streamlined business processes, empowered staff, offered better member service, and improved business performance.

Conclusion

In the era of digital transformation, Port Sacco recognized the importance of making datadriven business choices. They embarked on an analytics journey by forging a partnership with Pathways.

With this solution, Port Sacco has been successful in enhancing their decision-making process, tweaking their internal business operations for better output, achieving higher operational efficiency, and boosting productivity. The transition has also resulted in improved member experiences.

As the team worked closely with Port Sacco’s data, they were able to derive meaningful insights into the trends impacting financial institutions, notably in the Sacco sector. Pathways is thrilled to be at the forefront of analytics companies introducing Business Intelligence & Analytics capabilities to the Sacco industry.
