Nairobi, February 4, 2025 – Pathways Technologies, in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, officially unveiled its groundbreaking AI-powered Farmer Credit Scoring Solution at a well-attended event at Radisson Blu, Upperhill. This launch brought together key stakeholders from the financial and agricultural sectors, including policymakers, lenders, and farmer representatives. Attendees discussed the role of technology in transforming agricultural finance and the potential of the credit scoring model to drive long-term impact.
The launch marks a transformative step towards financial inclusion for farmers in Kenya. Developed through the Digital Transformation Center (DTC) Kenya initiative under GIZ and supported by baseline data from the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), this innovative credit scoring model seeks to leverage alternative data to provide a comprehensive assessment of farmers’ creditworthiness.
Traditionally, smallholder farmers and agribusinesses faced significant challenges in securing credit due to the lack of formal financial histories. The new AI-powered Credit Scoring Model bridges this gap by integrating alternative data sources, including yields, produce quality, farm size, market prices, foreign exchange rates, and transaction history, to enable robust farmer risk profile modeling. This will help credit service providers (CSPs) to price credit affordably while de-risking lending to farmers.
“Our AI-powered credit scoring solution is set to revolutionize access to credit for farmers, ensuring that they receive the financial support they deserve,” said Gideon Aswani, Managing Partner at Pathways Technologies. “By using alternative data, we can provide a broader and more accurate credit assessment unique to farming business, reducing risks for lenders and promoting sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.“
With the launch of this AI-powered credit scoring model, we envision data-driven impact in the agriculture sector, faster loan approvals, higher loan accessibility, and reduced lending risks for over 100,000 farmers served by Fortune Sacco Limited and 6.5 million Farmers registered under the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization.
Pathways Technologies now invites SACCOs, microfinance institutions, and commercial banks to partner in scaling this innovative credit scoring model. By integrating AI-driven financial solutions, institutions can expand their lending portfolios, mitigate delinquency risks, and drive financial inclusion across Kenya’s agricultural sector.
